Full Garden Watering

After some cold winter weather earlier this month, it turned warm and sunny and lovely. Temps in the high 50s today, and it may get into the 60s next week.

I hooked up the hose and watered the full garden -- everything. What the hose at the kitchen spigot couldn't reach I hand watered with the watering can. I got all the pots in the garage, and the oaks in the field.

The Rose of Sharon had the soil drench treatment for aphids last week, and they watered the stuff in, but it needed another good watering, so I got that done.

For all the work, my efforts aren't much. The ground is dry and water only goes down a few inches. It's not a real soaking, just a wetting. But it helps and I'll water again in March when temperatures are warm enough.

The hose has to be disconnected, drained, and brought back in for nights below freezing. We aren't out of winter yet.

Sixty One

A sunny day with no breeze and a temperature high of 61° -- just beautiful.

I put on my gardening clothes and clogs, added some sunscreen and went out to do real garden tasks. I cut back the perennials in the dining room window garden -- actually just crumbled the dry stalks with my hands and let the fine debris lie for mulch.

I chopped back the Spanish broom. That was a big chore -- so much bending and stooping and it pooped me out. I cut back the hairy goldenaster by the juniper too. A lot of fussy, awkward work.

I cut the skinny boxwood leaders in the potting bench curve, and did the major pruning of the one low side branch on the crabapple that I've wanted to do since I got it.

It felt so nice to be out, the weather was so pleasant, but I get so little done with lots of stops to sit, and I struggle with the hands and knees work and clean up and toting. I even cut up a bunch of boxes for the recycling bin, which was tough too!

Time to hire garden cleanup? Geronimo would do it and I have the number for Jesus that the neighbors gave us. I'd have to accumulate all the tasks and get everything done at once, rather than piecemeal as I see things that need doing.

Winter Watering

Watered today -- all the pots in the garage and things outside, including the oaks in the field. It got up to 58°, and with full sun and little breeze it was warm and nice.

I should have hooked up the hose. I did the watering toting can by can and it'a a lot.

I need a new 2 gallon plastic watering can, the old reliable one I brought from CT cracked and had to be tossed. The second one has a crack in the spout.

They're cheap and lightweight, and just the right size for what I can tote.

After watering it was nice to sit on the patio.
